Drop in APA Citation Workshops

Trexler Library is offering drop-in APA Citation format workshops Monday through Wednesday, March 29-31.

Monday and Tuesday sessions will run from 7pm to 8pm, and the Wednesday March 31 session will run 4:45pm to 5:30pm.

Participants should bring their APA Handbooks if they own one. Please tell your students about these additional workshops

What Trexler Can Do for Students

Are you frustrated by the inappropriate types of resources that your students include in their written and oral projects for your classes? Are you short on class time to help students learn to do better research?

Trexler Librarians can help your students become better and more confident researchers. We can help them find and use more scholarly resources, and we can save them time in the process.

We offer one-on-one research help by appointment to students as they begin looking for material for their papers and projects. We can do this via email, phone or in person in the library. Some instructors are offering extra credit or extra points to students who seek this research assistance.

Participating librarians enjoy working with your students in this more personal way. We have forms that students complete when they make their appointments, and we have included a line for librarians to sign and validate the student’s participation. We can send you these forms if you want to offer extra points or credit.

Our hope with this service is that students will have a positive experience working with librarians early in their college careers and then use our services throughout their time at DeSales.We would love to hear from you and your students.

Feb APA Workshops in Trexler

We have four APA workshops scheduled for the last weeek in February, 2010. Monday, Feb 22 (7pm to 8pm), Wednesday Feb. 24 (4pm tp 5pm), and Thursday, Feb. 25
(5pm to 6 pm) will be drop-in face to face sessions in the library conference room behind the circulation desk.

We are also providing an online workshop from 7pm to 8pm on Tuesday, Feb. 23. for our patrons who cannot get to campus for the face to face sessions. Brown Bag Lunches for Spring 2010

On Wednesday, March 17 at noon, Juilene McKnight will be our Library Brown Bag Lunch guest once again. Who better to celebrate with us the feast of St. Patrick? Stay tuned for title and location information.

On Wednesday, April 22nd Mr. Ben Marcune will speak about "The Sacred Geometry of Painters." This topic addresses the mathematical relationships appearing in our natural surroundings, in music, in art and in Salesian spirituality. We will meet in the library lobby area at 12:30pm.

Still in the planning stages we look forward to hosting Susan Gatanis, a member of Dr. Angie Corbo's Communications class. The title of the presentation will be "Girl Talk and Other Feminist Research" and it will be held sometime in March in celebration of Women's History Month.

APA Citation Format Workshops Nov. 30 - Dec. 3

Trexler Library is offering drop in APA Citation Format 2009 workshops Monday through Thursday, November 30 through December 3, 2009 from 4:30pm to 5:15pm.

We will also offer the workshops at a slightly later time on Tuesday (Dec. 1) and Thursday (Dec 3) from 6:30pm to 7:15pm. We hope these later workshops will accommodate our students who are also working full time.

Please bring your copy of the APA Manual if you have one.

"Mystery in the Library"

Students will divide into teams and follow clues throughout the building to solve the literary mystery while also learning to use library resources. ATLA Religion Database™ provides information on topics such as biblical studies, world religions, church history, and religion in social issues. This database is the definitive index for religious and theological literature. It contains 1.6 million bibliographic records covering the research literature of religion in over 60 languages. Most coverage spans from 1949 to the present. The database is produced by the American Theological Library Association.

Good News! Trexler Library has added 12 brand new laptops for circulation and use in the the library. They have large screens, improved battery life, and speedy Internet connections. They go out for 2 hours at a time, but you can renew them if no one else is waiting for a machine. Ask for them at the circulation desk and bring along your DeSales ID.

August Flood in Trexler

On Sunday, August 2, 2009, a pipe in the ceiling burst and water poured over a range of books on our second floor. The remediation folks came in and brought lots of dehumidifying fans to help us dry out the area. We have lost about 300+ books, but we are also grateful that the damage was limited.

A New Acquisition!

Check out one of the library’s latest acquisitions. Literally! Trexler Library is the proud owner of the Black Dog Opera Library, a collection of 13 book & compact disc sets designed to introduce readers to an understanding and appreciation of opera. Each book includes the complete opera on two compact discs, the complete libretto with annotations, a critical historical commentary, and brief biographical information on the performers. The set includes La Traviata, The Flying Dutchman, Aida, La Boheme, Carmen, Cavalleria Rusticana, Fidelio, Madame Butterfly, Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, Rigoletto, Tosca and La Traviata. The sets are shelved in the General Collection and can be checked out for a three-week period.
